There’s still time left to check the boxes on your summer to-do list, even as we bid frosé farewell and welcome pumpkin spice season. The long Labor Day weekend offers ample opportunity to get outside and enjoy the waning days of summer.
Check out our full guide to Labor Day Weekend in the DMV from lazy weekend ideas to events. Fear not if you can’t fit it all into the long weekend: Fall doesn’t officially start until September 22, after all.

Smithsonian National Gallery of Art's "Jazz in the Garden" is back this year but with just four shows and tickets are proving hard to get. But this doesn't mean you'll miss out on live music in a great outdoors venue this summer.
Outdoor concerts are an intrinsic soundtrack of the city: enjoying salsa grooves with a picnic in a public park, or stumbling across a cover band performing along the waterfront on the way to dinner, and being pulled in to listen to a few songs. We've scouted 10 open-air spots (most are free!) where you can get your groove on and listen to music with a view. How is it August already?! But no need to panic, there's still plenty of summer left and tons of amazing things to do as DC's reopening continues.
This month brings opera in the outfield, the return of a beloved indie music festival, a candlelight garden concert, yoga at an international embassy and a pop-up, interactive fashion fantasy. And that's just a sampler of what's ahead! Skip the whole Netflix and chill thing this spring. What's more fun than enjoying an old American pastime: drive-in and outdoor movies? It's the perfect opportunity to get out of the house, enjoy some snacks and maintain social distance. Drive-in movies have proved to be popular and are slowly starting to return this season. We've gathered the ones that have been announced so far, but it's early days and more outdoor movie screenings are sure to pop up like popcorn (ba-dum ching!). Spring has finally sprung in DC, bringing with it the promise of mild temperatures and easing COVID restrictions as more places start to reopen, hurray! We're totally ignoring the reappearance of the cicadas because, ick.
Whether you prefer hanging out indoors or outside, we've curated more than 20 activities to fill up your calendar this month. We've got aqua picnics, outdoor movies, art walks, experimental theatre, sneaker-filled and immersive, gallery-wide art installations, plus the latest reopened (and soon to be!) attractions. It's going to be a busy month; let's go! If you're interested in more local adventures, make sure to check out our DMV-focused content or contact us to custom-design your DC experience. Celebrate in-person or at home! The great irony of New Year’s Eve 2020, though, is that there’s never been a year to which we’re more excited to bid farewell, and yet, we can’t celebrate its departure in the all-out, stay-up-until-sunrise, shutdown-the-dancefloor way we otherwise might.
But just as we adapted Halloween and Thanksgiving and Christmas, there are plenty of options for bidding good riddance to this crazy year. Here’s a mix of virtual and in-person ways to spend New Year’s Eve and, at last, welcome 2021. Huzzah! There's "no place like home for the holidays" will have definitely new meaning this year. But that doesn't mean we have to miss out on seasonal entertainment. In fact, ticking the box on all the music performances and plays on our holiday wish list is easier than ever thanks to a slew of virtual programs.
We've curated some of the best holiday classics and newcomers for you to enjoy, so gather your pod, light a fire in the hearth and pour mug of cocoa or mulled wine, and be of good cheer as you enjoy your selections at home. Your clicks and attention helps local performers and venues at the same time, and that's definitely the best gift of all! Words, words, glorious words! Music. TV and movies. Social media. Talking with friends. Words are all around us every day, in one form or another. But we don’t really ever stop and think about the origin of the words and language we use, do we?
The newly opened Planet Word museum aims to change that. The interactive museum fills three floors of the historic Franklin School with games, touch screens and video screens to help visitors explore the origins and evolution of languages, and to play with words by reading, singing and speaking. In this museum-saturated city, Planet Word delivers something new. This is our absolute favorite time of the year! The holidays will be a bit different this year but nothing beats the sparkle, twinkle and glow of the season! From winter igloos, popup holiday markets, magnificent Christmas lights and storefront displays, "Panda Paws" and legendary yetis (yes, yetis), and other holiday adventures, there's a lot for holiday-lovers to enjoy in the nation's capitol. Available for download, our specially curated holiday itineraries and guides have all the tips and suggestions to help you experience the wonder of the season and discover can't-miss attractions to add to your 2020 winter to-do list.
