Whether you prefer indoor or outdoor rinks, the D.C. area offers options in many shapes and sizes.

Washington Harbour Ice Rink — 3050 K Street NW
In Georgetown, this ice skating rink offers 90-minute skating sessions with a 30-minute break between sessions. It’s the largest outdoor skating rink in the city, located at the lower plaza centered between 3000 and 3050 K Street NW. The rink is set to reopen in mid-November.

National Gallery and Sculpture Garden Rink — 7th Street and Constitution Avenue NW
Enjoy views of the large-scale sculptures in the National Gallery and Sculpture Garden while zipping along on ice skates. Running from Nov. 23 through March 2, 2025, admission to the rink covers two consecutive, 45-minute skating sessions that each begin on the hour. Washington Elite Skating School will offer group skating lessons for all ages as well as private lessons and group packages. Free lockers are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Wharf Ice Rink — 760 Maine Avenue SW
After enjoying some hot cocoa and other seasonal specialties at nearby restaurants, walk over to the District’s only over-water ice skating rink at The Wharf’s Transit Pier. The rink plans to open on Nov. 27.

Canal Park Ice Rink — 200 M Street SE
Near the Navy Yard-Ballpark Metro is Canal Park Ice Rink. With online registration strongly recommended, this rink has everything you need for skating, though it won’t open until sometime in November. Skate rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis with skating sessions lasting two hours with a break at the halfway point.

National Building Museum ice rink — 401 F Street NW
This brand-new, indoor ice skating rink is opening at D.C.’s National Building Museum. The rink is opening on Dec. 15 and running through Jan. 4, 2025. After skating, be sure to check out the nearby holiday market.

Like dessert after a great meal, fireworks are the best part of any Fourth of July celebration. If you want to have a great time watching the bombastic light show, avoid the National Mall and instead check out our picks for some of the best off-the-beaten path spots to where you can watch the big explosive display.

1. Enjoy cocktails and panoramic views at rooftop bars

There are several bars and hotels with great rooftops in DC to watch the fireworks in comfort on Independence Day. Vue at the Hotel Washington, Rooftop at Ven Embassy Row, SUMMIT at the Conrad and Top of the Gate at the Watergate are just a few that offer special ticketed fireworks viewing events. Make sure to check with the restaurants for details and ticket information.

2. Watch from the U.S. Supreme Court Plaza

The most powerful court in the country has a spacious 252-foot wide oval plaza that offers unobstructed views of the stunning fireworks bursting in air. It's a popular and patriotic spot so be sure early to find a spot to enjoy the show.

3. Head NW to National Cathedral

Located in the Northeast quadrant and don't want to make the trek down to the National Mall? No problem. Because it's one of the highest points in DC, National Cathedral is a great place away from the crowds to see the colorful light show. The best spots for optimal views include the grassy slope and the parking lot.

4. Catch a show and stay for the view from the Kennedy Center Terrace

Whether you're at Kennedy Center to see a show or not, the terrace undeniably offers one of the best views of the city, so expect one of the best views of the fireworks.

5. Head to the Francis Scott Key Bridge

Enjoy spectacular views of the waterfront and the fireworks overhead from the pedestrian path of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Afterwards, head into Georgetown to enjoy the lively nightlife and continue the celebration.

6. Reading, writing and fireworks at Cardozo High School

Yep, you read that correctly. This high school (1200 Clifton St NW) is one of the best places, and best kept secrets (until now!), to watch the fireworks. Its grassy slopes and hilltop location makes it an ideal place for fireworks watching. And about two miles away, east of North Capitol Street, McKinley Tech High School (151 T Street NE) is another academic locale where groups go on the fourth to gaze at the sky.

7. For more wide, open space venture to Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park and other green spaces

Locals flock to Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park more than than its weekend drum circles. Designed on a slope, it offers a verdant setting for when the fireworks go ka-boom. Other suggestions for parks to watch the show include Anacostia Park, Lady Bird Johnson Park on the Potomac, and the lovers lane known by most as Gravelly Point Park.

8. Get patriotic at U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial

Not only is the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial a great fireworks vantage point, it's also the perfect setting for getting in the right patriotic mood for the event.

9. It's a bird, it's a plane and fireworks bursting in air at Gravelly Point

You might not hear the fireworks exploding with the sound of airplane taking off and landing at Reagan National Airport, but it's hard to find a more exciting spot to watch the Independence Day colorful light show.

10. Treat yourself to a luxury fireworks viewing experience on the Potomac

If you're looking to splurge upwards of 200 bucks, you can lounge in the middle of the Potomac River, beer in hand, and watch the fireworks fall overhead. City Cruises offers a range of high seas adventures for the Fourth that leave from multiple destinations, including an over-the-top shindig complete with a plated dinner, live music, dancing, an open bar, and “spectacular views of the monuments and fireworks.”

11. Head to Hains Point

This spot in East Potomac Park is a serene stretch of public land on a peninsula that stretches into the Potomac River. The park provides great views of the Potomac and the Anacostia River, as well as the Washington Channel. There are several spots that feature picnic tables and benches for viewing of the aerial extravaganza.

12. Celebrate the Fourth at The Wharf fireworks viewing experience
Or try yet another dramatic view of the July Fourth fireworks, this time from The Wharf. Enjoy music and spectacular views on District Pier with a bar serving Smirnoff Red White and Berry seltzer, beer, and more. Seating is free and available on a first-come, first served basis. Take it from us, go EARLY to claim the best viewing spot!

13. Hi-Lawn in NoMa
Have you heard of Hi-Lawn? Although not the only one, the rooftop bar above Union Market is hosting a free party from 2 p.m. until 11 p.m. (first come, first serve seating on the turf lawn).

We've already covered some of the best ways to elevate your picnic grub, so now we're looking at the perfect boozy canned accompaniments because, seriously, hauling a bottle of wine and all of the paraphernalia gets to be a hassle on a picnic, or camping trip or a day at the beach. Corkscrews and stemware aren’t always convenient. And hauling glassware?! Fuggedaboutit.

Besides, what says "it's summertime and the living is easy" more than grab-and-go canned wine and cocktails?

We've scouted some of the best canned wines and cocktails -- made and sold in the DMV, of course -- for your next day drinking hang on the patio, the beach or wherever.

OLD WESTMINSTER WINERY

Old Westminster Winery, a family-run vineyard in Maryland was the first winery in the Mid-Atlantic to uncork, literally, the canned wine trend. They offer seven canned choices, including: Farmer Fizz, a sparkling Chardonnay; Carbonic, a Cabernet Franc; and Seeds & Skins, a skin-fermented Pinot Gris.

TENTH WARD DISTILLING COMPANY

Women-owned Tenth Ward Distilling Company has entered the canned cocktail game with four unconventional mixes. Choose from: Peach Clementine Lemonade Iced Tea, the Blackberry Lemon Crush with rum, blackberry, lemon and basil; .the Corpse Reviver No. 10 boasts soft herbal notes bolstered by balanced notes of vanilla and chai tea; and the Smoked Whiskey Sour is made with Tenth Ward’s signature Smoked Corn Whiskey, lemon, honey, ginger and ancient bitters. At 8% ABV, the cocktail is slightly smokey, with a burst of fresh ginger and citrus. If you can't make it up to Frederick, Md where they're based, pick your flavor at a bar or liquor store near you.

BLUESTONE VINEYARD

The family-run, Virginia winery offers four different kinds of canned wine: Beau ($7.95 per can), Vidal Blanc ($8.95 per can), Moscato ($9.95 per can) and Dry Rosé ($9.95 per can). Each can contains two-and-a-half servings of wine, which can make them more attractive than purchasing a whole bottle to some. Bluestone winemakers said that they chose wines that do not need to be aged and he said they will taste best when people drink them shortly after they get them.

SANGRIA COCKTAIL KIT

Who doesn't love sangria? It's the ultimate summer bev and this genius kit makes it super simple to whip up a batch. It comes complete with cherry, lemon, orange and citrus-infused vegan non-GMO cane sugar to which you add your booze and let the flavors infuse in the fridge for three days (we wouldn't tell if you imbibe sooner). Serves eight.

BELLE ISLE MOONSHINE

Honey Habanero, Cold Brew Coffee, Blood Orange and Ruby Red. You name it and Belle Isle has probably infused these funky flavors into their 100% organic corn moonshine. The Richmond-based distillery is now incorporating their award-winning shine into cans for easy on-the-go sips. Select from Ruby Red & Soda, Blood Orange & Soda or Shine & Soda, all naturally gluten-free and sipping at 110 calories or less per can.

DEVILS BACKBONE BREWING CO

The beer makers also dabble in the spirits industry. Located in Lexington, VA, Devils Backbone Distilling Co. produces an array of gins, fruit brandies, rum and now, canned cocktails. Their 80-proof Fresh Hop Gin is dropped in a green and blue can with dry tonic for their unique spin on the classic cocktail. More of a rum drinker? Reach for the purple and orange can instead to enjoy sips of ginger, vanilla and oak pulled from Devils Backbone’s Mountain Blackstrap Dark Rum and spicy ginger beer.

BOLD ROCK

Hard cider makers Bold Rock (brewed in foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Nellysford, VA) introduced its line of Craft Cocktails a couple of years ago. The first canned creation appeared as the cleverly named Bold Fashioned. Of course, it's infused with freshly pressed apple juice too. The second release was the vodka-filled Copper Mug Mule fashioned with natural Blue Ridge apple juice, ginger and lime.

There’s no other place like Washington, DC for the Fourth of July! Whether you're looking to celebrate with a bang or something more low-key, check out these entertaining, and FREE, ways to have a blast this Independence Day!

1. Enjoy the Free 'A Capitol Fourth' Concert at the U.S. Capitol

Celebrate the 4th on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol at the annual "A Capitol Fourth" concert, which begins at 8pm. This year's concert features Boys II Men, Chicago, Belinda Carlisle, the Sesame Streets Muppets, the National Symphony Orchestra and more. The grand finale features awesome fireworks over the National Mall.

2. Explore water activities, music, fireworks and more at DC's waterfronts

From the Anacostia river to the Potomac, DC's waterfronts offer exciting entertainment and recreational activities. Bike ride along the Anacostia River on the Anacostia Trail; rock out to live music and a star-spangled fireworks show on the piers at The Wharf; admire stunning views at restaurants just steps from the river at the Capitol Riverfront; and get out on the water in kayaks and canoes in Georgetown.

3. Take a historical trip to see the country's founding documents (and fathers!)

There's no better time to visit the National Archives than the Fourth of July. Original copies of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, the founding documents of the United States, are all on display there. After seeing these essential and historic documents, meet the Founding Fathers who helped establish the birth of a nation with programming featuring costumed actors in Revolutionary-era costumes.

4. Pay a visit to see the presidential portraits at the National Gallery of Art

What better time to pay homage to the former U.S. presidents than on the Fourth of July? The presidents of the United States are forever immortalized in America’s Presidents, the only complete collection of presidential portraits outside of the White House. The exhibit features multiple images of every president (the current commander-in-chief excluded), including the famous “Lansdowne” portrait of George Washington (painted by Gilbert Stuart), a stunning portrait of Barack Obama by Kehinde Wileythe, the Alexander Gardner “cracked-plate” portrait of Abraham Lincoln and even caricatured sculptures of Lyndon Johnson, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter.

5. Admire the country's First Ladies at the National Museum of American History

Behind every great man, is a great woman. The First Ladies exhibit at the National Museum of American History explores the unofficial but important position of first lady and the ways that different women have shaped the role to make their own contributions to the presidential administrations and the nation. The exhibition features more than two dozen gowns from the Smithsonian’s almost 100-year old First Ladies Collection, including those worn by Frances Cleveland, Lou Hoover, Jacqueline Kennedy, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama.

6. Visit the Original Star-Spangled Banner

Observe the flag that inspired our national anthem in a two-story display chamber that protects the flag while providing a dramatic view of its “broad stripes and bright stars.” The exhibit tells the dramatic story of the flag and traces its journey from Mary Pickersgill’s house to the Smithsonian.

7. What to a Slave is the Fourth of July?

"What to the slave is the Fourth of July?" posed Frederick Douglass to a gathering of 500-600 abolitionists in Rochester, N.Y., in 1852. Admission to the speech was 12 cents, and the crowd at the Rochester Ladies' Anti-Slavery Society was enthusiastic, voting unanimously to endorse the speech at its end. This speech would be remembered as one of the most poignant addresses by Douglass, a former slave turned statesman. Douglass gave it on July 5, refusing to celebrate the Fourth of July until all slaves were emancipated.

On July 3, 165 years later, the same question will be asked. Every year on Independence Day (July 4th), the National Park Service offers visitors the opportunity to come to Cedar Hill, the last residence of Frederick Douglass, to see and hear a performance of his most-famous speech, What to the Slave is the 4th of July?, delivered by a Douglass reenactor on the front porch. This year's event will also mark the Grand reopening of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site!

8. Grab a seat at a local parade

Starting right before noon, the annual National Independence Day Parade will be held on Constitution Avenue. Self-described as “America’s biggest and best Independence Day Parade,” the event will also be livestreamed on Facebook and later available on YouTube.

Before the Constitution Avenue parade kicks off, there’s always the annual Capitol Hill Community 4th of July Parade on Barracks Row. Choose to organize a group to register for the parade itself, or join the crowd lining the street.

9. Visit Constitution Garden

Honoring those 56 visionary men who signed the Declaration of Independence, this memorial in Constitution Garden shows how diverse this group of signers was (it included lawyers, physicians, ironmasters, merchants, farmers, clergymen, writers and surveyors). Located on a little island and accessed via a walkway, it's a a great spot for rest and contemplation.

10. Watch a stunning fireworks display

Red, white and boom! Fireworks are the highlight of any Fourth of July celebration and this year marks their return to the National Mall. Set off against a backdrop of magnificent monuments and memorials, DC's are particularly gasp-worthy and there are plenty of places to get a great view. The general rule of thumb: If you can see the monuments, you'll be able to see the fireworks.

Moorenko's Ice Cream (Capitol Hill/Eastern Market)

More than just custard, Goodies is about good times and special memories.

The goodness starts with Goodies’ signature, Wisconsin-style custard; it’s decadently thick, rich and oh so creamery. There’s the “Johnnie B. Good” banana pudding shake, and the “Boogie Woogie,” a turtle pecan sundae that is a crowd favorite approved by Food Network. But the real standout is the Big Apple Donutwich. It’s a cinnamon sugar topped apple cider donut (a DC/Virginia favorite!) stuffed with their vanilla-bean custard, drizzled with salted caramel. Here's the Scoop (DC)

The Black-owned ice shop across from Howard University has just about everything want to satisfy a sweet tooth craving. "Here’s the Scoop" sells everything from hand-dipped ice cream to milkshakes, to cookies and cakes. Decisions, decisions . . . Popular ice cream flavors include blueberry/pomegranate sorbet, salted caramel, mousse track, butter pecan, and birthday cake. And for the treats other than ice cream, their pound cake is a really big hit!

Ice Cream Jubilee (Multiple Locations)

Named one of America's best ice cream shops and voted Best Ice Cream in Washington, DC year after year, Ice Cream Jubilee delights with quirky unique flavors and great dairy free options. Inspired by international travels, decadent cocktails, and childhood memories, take your tastebuds on a journey with flavors like Cookies & Cookie Dough (its best-selling flavor), Thai Iced Tea, and Banana Bourbon Caramel. Seasonal flavors include Blueberry Pie, Boozy Eggnog, Marionberry and Chocolate Matzo Crack. The menu changes every few months, but classics like Caramel Popcorn, Fresh Minty Chip and Bold Vanilla are always available. Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams (Multiple Locations)

Give it up the OG Dairy Queen! Founder Jeni Bauer started making artisanal ice cream with all-natural dairy and uber-creative ingredients before small-batch creameries were even a thing. Plan to find a line out the door, but the smell of freshly made waffle cones will hold you over as you wait for this extremely popular U Street spot. It’s Insta-worthy decor aside, Jeni’s ice cream has attracted a loyal following for its rich creaminess and unusual flavors. Fun flavors include Pumpkin 5-Spice made with kabocha squash and buttercup pumpkins, and Intelligentsia Black Cat Espresso fashioned from ground espresso beans. One of our favorites is the Frose Sorbet, a sangria-style frozen rose, for a cool and boozy treat. We highly recommend it!

Mount Desert Island Ice Cream (Mount Pleasant, DC)

The uber-creamy Maine favorite arrived in Mount Pleasant two summers ago, bringing with it one of the best cookies and cream varieties in town, along with a White Russian flavor dubbed “the Dude” after the Big Lebowski. Scoops range from classics like strawberry and cookies and cream to more experimental flavors—coriander streusel with berries, spicy Thai chili coconut, and a blueberry sour cream crumble. One of the most popular is the Girl Scout-inspired Thin Mints flavor, with Callebaut chocolate and mint cookies baked on site. For those who can’t decide, get an ice cream flight. In addition to waffle and sugar cones, the ice cream is available in milkshake, float, and sundae form with sauces and toppings.

Nicecream (Multiple Locations)

Nicecream makes ice cream with a twist. The difference? It uses liquid nitrogen to flash-freeze ice cream; each serving is made to order. Liquid nitrogen is poured into a bowl of cream, milk, sugar and flavor-specific ingredients and immediately begins to evaporate, freezing the ice cream and sending clouds of gaseous nitrogen over the counter like a super-cool science experiment. Freezing times for different flavors vary, but each serving is finished within 30 to 60 seconds. Nicecream sells four flavors of ice cream a day, culled from a rotation of 70. They include bacon, honey lavender, strawberry, mint mojito, lemony Jenny and pistachio. Nicecream is super cool (pun intended!).

Pitango Gelato (Multiple locations)

There are a few cute gelato places in the District, but none are as authentic or delicious as Pitango. The homegrown chain Pitango prides itself on serving traditional gelato flavors, such as hazelnut and pistachio, as well as more modern interpretations such as dark chocolate sorbet and green tea. The gelato is made out of organic milk and cream from grass-fed cows on an organic farm in Pennsylvania. There are also tons of great dairy-free options here too (surprisingly including the dark chocolate!).

Southwest Soda Pop (Wharf, DC)

Remember the excitement you had as a kid when you went to the neighborhood ice cream stand? Southwest Soda Pop Shop is that place. A Black-owned, female run ice cream stand, it is a throwback with nostalgic treats including cones, floats, and chillers. Folks line up for the colorful, Insta-popping creations which include the “chip wich” and “cake explosions,” their signature parfait with layers of cake and ice cream plus toppings. You’ll need a camera and a spoon for this one! The walkup window also sells fruit smoothies, half-smokes, and of course, soda pop.

Thomas Sweet (Georgetown)

Thomas Sweet is an old time, mom and pop feeling shop, with something for everyone. It has blend-in options, endless toppings (Kit-Kats, Oreos, cookie dough, gummy bears you name it!) and even homemade fudge. This is the place to get your decadent, over the top ice dessert. Our favorite? The chocolate fudge brownie ice cream, stacked on a scoop of Oreo, inside a sprinkle dipped cone with Kit-Kats on top. Just don't tell your dentist.

This DC staple is also a favorite of President Biden. Biden, it seems, is a creature of habit. So there’s a good chance that when he’s hankering for a cone, he’ll head to a place he already knows. This Georgetown standby, which has been around since the Carter administration, served the former VP as recently as 2019. He was spotted stopping by with his son Hunter and grandkids for a post-Cafe Milano treat.

It might be the shortest month of the year, but there's still a ton of awesome things to do in February in the District as we spotlight a mix of can't-miss and under-the-radar events.

Honor Black History Month with events at attractions like Frederick Douglass' historic home and the DC Public Library, laissez les bons temps rouler with Mardi Gras celebrations at the Wharf, take the polar bear plunge (brrr!) and live the apres-ski life with events throughout the month at Wunder Garten.

The month also brings several winter festivals. Lunar New Year celebrations roar into DC with food, art and parades and the Mother Tongue Film Festival celebrates and preserves languages and culture from native communities. Also, the REACH at the Kennedy Center hosts a two-week festival that explores the connections between art, science, and the environment with a jam packed schedule of forest-inspired events, films, poetry, exhibits, panel discussions, food and installations.

Lunar New Year Family Celebration at Smithsonian American Art Museum. Smithsonian's annual celebration is presented in partnership with the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the United States of America. Chinese Lunar New Year Parade, Don't miss one the biggest events of the Lunar New Year! DAR Museum’s Lunar New Year Festival. Tea at Ching Ching Cha. Find your zen at this Chinese tea room in Dupont Circle which brews and sells more than 70 kinds of tea. China Chilcano. Enjoy the start of the Lunar New Year with special dishes and cocktails inspired by abundance and being together at Chef José Andrés’ Peruvian-Chinese restaurant.
