June is our favorite month, and not just because it's our birthday (though that doesn't hurt!).

Summer in DC kicks off with sun-filled days and endless things to do. From making a splash at the waterfronts, free festivals, outdoor concerts and movies, a cultural scene that can't be beat, and gallery exhibits galore, DC is full of amazing and unexpected fun. What to look forward to: Sunset military parades, Smithsonian Folklife Festival, pride celebrations, an immersive King Tut exhibit, the Black Food Festival, a sunrise dance party, and that's just for starters!

SUSTAIN Art Installation. SUSTAIN is a collective response to sustainability and the climate crisis featuring community-sourced poetry and art on saris. Made with women farmers in Bangladesh and DC participants of public sari and urban gardening workshops, the saris will wrap around the six grand columns of LINE DC’s façade, and create a welcoming passageway at Unity Park. Other highlights include a soundwalk, poetry slam, and film screenings about sustainable practices and the impacts of climate on agriculture and food security. 👤🆓June 1 - 9
Ballet in the plaza. Enjoy live ballet performances by the Washington Ballet in The Plaza at CityCenter *weather permitting* 👤🆓 June 2 - 4
Awesome Con.  More than 70,000 fans will be able to see their favorite stars from comics, films, TV, toys and games throughout Awesome Con, a three-day festival that is Washington, DC’s own Comic Con. Meet the cast of Marvel’s 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,Other special guests include the cast of Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Anthony Daniels of Star Wars fame, Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz from Star Trek: Discovery and others. Plus, don't miss  Destination Cosplay, a special feature dedicated to all things cosplay. This year, the fun only expands with super cool photo backdrops, fandom meetups, craft demonstrations and additional live entertainment. 👤💲​🎟 June 3 - 5
Capital pride. The DC community comes together for Capital Pride, a citywide celebration of LGBTQ rights and the continuing fight for them. This year, Capital Pride returns to in-person celebrations, including its official opening party,  a block party, the popular Pride Parade and the Pride Festival and Concert. Marine evening parades. You won't want to miss the patriotic and pristine ceremonial drill of the Marines during the summer Friday Evening Parades, hosted at Barracks Row in Capitol Hill.  Registration required. 👤🆓 June 3 - August 26
Merge. Coming to Kennedy Center, MERGE, an exhibition of artwork that considers the intersections, juxtaposition and combinations of creative process and disability identity. This exhibit displays artwork by 15 emerging artists. 👤🆓 June 3 - July 24
Queer beer festival. The Wharf's District Pier throws a two-day craft beer festival celebrating the unique, vibrant voices of the queer community in the industry including queer owned and/or operated breweries. The two-day festival will include unlimited craft beer samples, live music, and great food. ​👤💲June 3 - 4
A musical about queer history. The Gay Men's Chorus of Washington presents the east coast premiere of Andrew Lippa’s Unbreakable, a thrilling musical uplifting LGBTQ+ lives in America through the 20th century. 👤💲🎟 June 4​
Sound scene. Sound Scene, an audio collective of Washington, DC-based sound artists and enthusiasts, is a three-day exploration of interactive audio art installations, live performances and small group workshops at Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden that explore the them of "trust." The event includes: a drone-based sonic outdoor experience performed live by artist Laurie Anderson as part of the yearlong celebration of Lou Reed’s 80th birthday, hands-on activity stations, an instrument interaction with the “Wish Tree,” an installation by Yoko Ono, and more. Sound Scene is the region’s largest interactive audio art event and open to all ages. 👤🆓🎟June 3 - 5
Walk weekend. Dupont Kalorama Museums Consortium celebrates the return of "Walk Weekend" with special exhibitions, tours, music, and demonstrations at Dupont Underground, Anderson House-Society of Cincinnati, Dumbarton House, The National Museum of American Jewish Military History, The Phillips Collection, and Woodrow Wilson House. 👤​🆓​ June 4 - 5
Villans have more fun. In present day Appalachian Georgia, a high school class explores the seminal American classic, The Crucible in John Proctor is the Villain . As scandal swirls in their community and old heroes are unmasked, the English assignment becomes uncomfortably relevant for the students. The line between witch and heroine blurs in this post-Me Too examination of power, love, and sex education. 👤💲​Now thru June 5​
Revenge play. Lola and T met years ago in group therapy, where they set a far-off deadline to be happier…or else. With that deadline suddenly approaching, they’ll meet on the George Washington Bridge for one last chance to turn the world upside down. Woolly Mammoth's production of There's Always the Hudson brings together two half-broken souls who are out for revenge on everyone who has ever hurt, stolen from, or otherwise wronged them in this foul and fearless adventure. 👤💲🎟 Now thru June 5
Korean Cool. National Museum of Asian Art hosts hosting an outdoor festival to celebrate the launch of their annual Korean Film Festival DC. Experience Korean culture in this after-hours event with music direct from Seoul by folk-pop band ADG7 and exclusive curator tours of the newly installed exhibition Once Upon a Roof: Vanished Korean Architecture. 👤🆓 June 10
19. Written by O-Slice, one of the most technically gifted MCs on the DMV underground music circuit, 19. is a dazzling new multimedia experience fusing theatre and live concert. Performed at THEARC BLACK BOX,  19 uses poetry, music, storytelling, and verse to tell the coming-of-age story of a Nigerian-American artist on the rise. 👤💲🎟June 10
Haitian soul. Haiti’s hottest exports, Lakou Mizik bring their Haitian roots music with a soulful energy to the AMP at Pike & Rose for a sweaty, feel-good time. With their positive messages and roots revival music, they have become one of Haiti’s hottest exports and have gained an international following with their critically acclaimed debut album “Wa Di Yo” and their mystical, soulful, dance party inducing live shows.💲🎟 June 10 
Korean film festival. This year’s festival offers a panorama of films that highlight the achievements of the country’s most talented and innovative filmmakers, offering the kind of window on contemporary Korean society that only great cinema can convey. This year’s festival is a hybrid affair, showcasing new features in the recently reopened Meyer Auditorium and a program of experimental works and shorts online. 👤💻​🆓🎟 June 10 - 26
Home Rule Music Festival. Celebrate the music and culture of Washington, DC with legendary jazz artists and musicians, and activities including a record fair, local food trucks, craft beverages, and the premiere of a new documentary short film on Black Fire Records. Performances will feature Black Fire artist Plunky & Oneness of JuJu, legendary progressive jazz artists Doug Carn and David Murray, and the TCB Band. General admission is free; VIP tickets available. 🆓💲June 11
Artechouse Afro Frequencies. Walk alongside African kings and queens as you celebrate the Black experience in Aṣẹ: Afro Frequencies, Artechouse's powerful and futuristic audiovisual exhibition inspired by aṣẹ, the Yoruba concept relating to our power to produce change. 👤💲🎟 Starts June 11
Shaw photography walk. Join the DC History Center for a three-hour, in-person photography workshop including a photo walk and demo in the Shaw neighborhood. Writer, oral historian, and Shaw resident Shilpi Malinowski will begin the day by introducing us to her neighborhood and neighbors. and photographer Shedrick Pelt will take photos of Shaw street scenes as you learn about the neighborhood’s history. Pelt will develop his film from the walk while discussing his own journey documenting DC through photography.  👤​💲🎟June 11
Temple open house.  The for the first time in 50+ years, the Washington D.C. Temple of the Church of Latter-Day Saints (the one that looks like a Disney castle) will be open for public tours. This is a rare opportunity to go inside this important landmark and experience its beautiful architecture, art, and décor.  👤🆓 Now thru June 11
Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll. The Wharf brings back an old-school summer favorite—roller skating!  Bring your skates (kids can rent skates) to the roller rink on Transit Pier. The Wharf Roller Rink will become the hottest party on 8 wheels during the second weekends of June, July, and August. 👤🆓💲 June 11 - 12
Princess in Dior. Fashion and mementos from the legendary life of Princess Grace of Monaco will appear in North America for the first time at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens, celebrating her dedicated relationship with haute couturier Christian Dior. 💲🎟June 11 - Jan 8, 2023 
Math meets art. ​Mathemalchemy is a collaborative art installation at the National Academy of Sciences conceived as the brainchild of a  mathematician and physicist and a fiber artist that celebrates the creativity and beauty of mathematics. Additionally, the exhibition pays homage to mathematicians and mathematical ideas from many different origins and backgrounds. Visitors will have an opportunity take part in family-friendly activities including hands-on and storytelling activities based upon the installation. go on a self-guided polyhedra treasure hunt and take part in a gallery talk with the creators. Pleasantview, a Novel in Stories. Celeste Mohammed’s novel Pleasantview, set in a fictional town, reveals the dark side of the Caribbean dream. Join Mohammed for a reading and conversation, co-presented by the DC Writers Room and the Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival, in partnership with Planet Word. This conversation is one you won’t want to miss. 👤🆓June 13
Art in bloom. The cherry blossoms might be gone but there are still plenty of flowers in bloom in DC. Art in Bloom DC returns to Anderson House with a three-day event showcasing floral sculptures inspired by the art and furnishings displayed throughout the historic mansion. Experience the exquisite art and architecture of Anderson House, headquarters of the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati, as 30 of DC's most creative and innovate flower designers display floral sculptures inspired by the art and furnishings are displayed throughout the museum.  Public viewing,  June 13 -1 5, free; Special reception, June 14; paid ticket. June 13 - 15
Sunset parades. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy the Sunset Parade at the Marine Corps War Memorial. on Tuesdays this summer. The ceremony features the music of "The Commandant's Own", The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and precision drill by the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. 👤🆓 June 14 - August 9
Walk like an Egyptian. National Geographic Museum celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the legendary discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings with Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience. The exhibit is a cinematic cinematic immersive exhibition that uses innovative video projections and soundscapes to transport visitors to Egypt, where they experience the country's ancient wonders. 👤💲June 17 - Feb 6, 2023

Juneteenth freedom day celebration. The Juneteenth Freedom Day Music Festival celebrates the African-American community and culture through music while also providing an affordable family-friendly event for  everyone to participate. It will be hosted by WPGC’s own Nori Nori and Dj Akademiks and feature DCs Own Black Alley and highlight several local talented emerging artists and other talented acts. 👤💲🎟 June 19
African American Civil War Museum Juneteenth celebration. In honor of Juneteenth, join the African American Civil War Memorial Museum for a wreath laying ceremony  followed by a living history presentation of the School of the Soldier. 👤​🆓June 20

Folklife festival. Every summer, the National Mall  becomes the stage for the most colourful and original musicians, dancers artists, and performers from different countries of the world. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is a kaleidoscope of cultures and massive kid-friendly educational experience and celebration of diversity. The ten-day event is one of the largest cultural events in DC. An opening evening concert will be on June 23 and daytime programs begin on June 23. 👤​🆓 June 22–27 + June 30–July 4
Laurie Anderson film double feature. In honor of  artist Laurie Anderson’s broad achievement in filmmaking, Hirshhorn hosts an evening screening that combines a concert film (Home of the Brave) and an introspective meditation on life and storytelling (Heart of a Dog). 👤​🆓 🎟June 23

Booth's escape. A single shot in Ford’s Theater on an April night in 1865 set off a dramatic chain of events, one of the most sensational of which was John Wilkes Booth’s flight from Washington. On this all-day tour, Civil War historian Gregg Clemmer traces his path from the District to Maryland to the Virginia barn where he met his death. 👤💲June 25
Union Station up close and personal. Take a behind-the-scenes tour of Washington Union Station where you will learn the secrets of Daniel Burnham’s 1907 architectural masterpiece. A percentage of the proceeds will go toward ongoing preservation efforts at Union Station.👤💲June 25

Drum beat. Inspired by laws mandated that enslaved Africans could not assemble or use their drums to signal the uprising, Step Afrika's latest production, Drumfolk, tells the rich story of a movement that could not be stopped and transformed African American culture from then to the present day, The immersive production will be the first of three as part of a multi-year collaborative partnership between Step Afrika! and Arena Stage.👤💲​Now - June 26
Goddamn Comedy Jam. The DC Improv comedy club celebrates its 30th anniversary with a comedy and music party! The Goddamn Comedy Jam features stand-ups doing a set, then performing their favorite song accompanied by a live band. House of Cardin. Spend a summer evening in Hillwood’s luscious gardens watching the documentary House of Cardin, which examines the extraordinary life and career of legendary fashion designer Pierre Cardin, who started his career at Christian Dior. Films on the Green is presented in partnership with the Embassy of France; registration is required. The FUTURES is now Smithsonian Arts & Industries Building reopened after 20-years with FUTURES, a future-focused exhibit that that asks us to imagine what the future could look like. Make plans to see the pop-up exhibit before it's gone next month. 🆓 Now - July 6
Afro-Atlantic Histories. Now at the National Gallery of Art,  Afro-Atlantic Histories, explores the historical experiences and cultural formations of Black and African people since the 17th century. More than 130 powerful works of art, including paintings, sculpture, photographs, and time-based media by artists from Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean, are featured. 👤​🆓 Now thru July 17​
Citywide play. Chemical Exile, the newest interactive and immersive play from Rorschach Theatre, takes participants to eight locations across the DC area as a complex story unfolds about families, forgotten histories and the uncharted frontiers of the mind. The season-long fictional narrative plays out over layers of history and magic realism. Guests receive a box in the mail monthly that includes a new Chapter in the story, each box containing hand-crafted objects - letters, drawings, souvenirs, photos, or even snacks - and a map to a location in their city. This present moment. Renwick's latest exhibit, This Present Moment: Crafting a Better World, showcases the dynamic landscape of American craft and highlights the role that artists play in our world to spark essential conversations, stories of resilience, and methods of activism. It centers more expansive definitions and acknowledgments of often-overlooked histories and contributions of women, people of color, and other marginalized communities. 🆓 Now thru April 2, 2023
