Jump start 2022 with a month full of terrific things to do in DC!
From live theatre to art museums and films to food, and everything in between, January is packed with an awesome mix of popular and under-the-radar activities for you to discover new interests, local businesses and different parts of the city. There's the bi-annual Restaurant Week, the return of Winter Lanterns at the REACH, the dramatic reimagining of MLK's assassination, one-night only chef's dinner at the LINE and many more not-to-be-missed events. Check out our guide to the biggest events coming to DC this January, below. Catch the DMV-based band live at the DITR fall music festival on Oct 9! The Washington DC region has one of the best music scenes in the country Whether you prefer jazz, go-go, hardcore punk, hip-hop, dance or anything in between, you can go out and hear a new local band in a different genre -- and in a different venue! -- every night of the week if you're so inclined. Back in our music journo-wannbe days with DC Music Download, we got to meet a lot of amazing local established bands and rising stars. One of our favorites continues to be RDGLDGRN who will be headlining the Down in the Reeds all-day music festival on Oct 9 at the Parks at Walter Reed. RDGLDGRN have worked with music legends Pharrell Williams and Dave Grohl, liken themselves to a hip hop-centric version of Daft Punk, and throw one hell of a KARNIVAL-like show. Besides they're music, we love that these guys are hometown-proud and continue to live in the area and perform locally, despite having the kind of national profile that would have caused many others to leave for so-called greener pastures. For these DMV boys, there's nothing like home, jamming with friends and a Go Go beat. We're re-sharing an interview we did with them a few years ago so that you can get to get them before checking them out for yourself at DITR! Ahhh, September (shout out to Earth, Wind & Fire), that magical month when you can still sip rose on a sun drenched patio yet still sense the shift to the first leaves starting to change color. It’s time to soak up the last days of summer and make the most of these final days.
We've pulled together lots of fun local activities and events to help you discover new and different things to do and see a different side of DC. Don't waste the sun--let’s do this! There’s still time left to check the boxes on your summer to-do list, even as we bid frosé farewell and welcome pumpkin spice season. The long Labor Day weekend offers ample opportunity to get outside and enjoy the waning days of summer.
Check out our full guide to Labor Day Weekend in the DMV from lazy weekend ideas to events. Fear not if you can’t fit it all into the long weekend: Fall doesn’t officially start until September 22, after all. Smithsonian National Gallery of Art's "Jazz in the Garden" is back this year but with just four shows and tickets are proving hard to get. But this doesn't mean you'll miss out on live music in a great outdoors venue this summer.
Outdoor concerts are an intrinsic soundtrack of the city: enjoying salsa grooves with a picnic in a public park, or stumbling across a cover band performing along the waterfront on the way to dinner, and being pulled in to listen to a few songs. We've scouted 10 open-air spots (most are free!) where you can get your groove on and listen to music with a view. July starts off with a bang but there's still plenty of awesome things to get excited about throughout the entire month. From star spangled celebrations to a high-end nightclub at Kennedy Center, outdoor art installations and a pop-up cocktail garden, we've compiled 20+ can't miss activities you'll want to have on your summer to-do list.

What's more fun than enjoying an old American pastime: drive-in and outdoor movies? It's the perfect opportunity to get out of the house, enjoy some snacks and maintain social distance. Drive-in movies have proved to be popular and are slowly starting to return this season. We've gathered the ones that have been announced so far, but it's early days and more outdoor movie screenings are sure to pop up like popcorn (ba-dum ching!). Spring has finally sprung in DC, bringing with it the promise of mild temperatures and easing COVID restrictions as more places start to reopen, hurray! We're totally ignoring the reappearance of the cicadas because, ick.
Whether you prefer hanging out indoors or outside, we've curated more than 20 activities to fill up your calendar this month. We've got aqua picnics, outdoor movies, art walks, experimental theatre, sneaker-filled and immersive, gallery-wide art installations, plus the latest reopened (and soon to be!) attractions. It's going to be a busy month; let's go! If you're interested in more local adventures, make sure to check out our DMV-focused content or contact us to custom-design your DC experience. The Tidal Basin is arguably the most well-known spot in DC to see cherry blossom, but I'll let you in on a secret: The famous blooms can actually be found all around the city. Yep, it's a fact. The Tidal Basin just has better PR.
If crowds aren't your thing or you're just over the Tidal Basin hype, we've scouted 14 alternative,-- but still amazing spots! -- where you can see these natural beauties in all their pink and white glory minus the Disneyland level crowds. |
