Hot times in the city.
It's officially summer in DC and along with the humidity (ugh) comes plenty of indoor/outdoor activities to enjoy on these longer days of sunlight. This month brings day-long cultural festivals, Fourth of July celebrations, and the return of summer favorites after a two-year absence, including National Building Museum's always epic summer activation, Kenilworth's lotus and water lily festival, Capital Fringe, the Office Experience and so much more! June is our favorite month, and not just because it's our birthday (though that doesn't hurt!).
Summer in DC kicks off with sun-filled days and endless things to do. From making a splash at the waterfronts, free festivals, outdoor concerts and movies, a cultural scene that can't be beat, and gallery exhibits galore, DC is full of amazing and unexpected fun. What to look forward to: Sunset military parades, Smithsonian Folklife Festival, pride celebrations, an immersive King Tut exhibit, the Black Food Festival, a sunrise dance party, and that's just for starters! This month is going to be epic! May is one of our favorite months in DC. It's the pre-summer sweet spot when there's no humidity, the nights are cool and the great outdoors beckons you to spend time exploring off-the-beaten-path spots and hidden gems. Plus, there's no mosquitoes!
This month brings the return of outdoor movies, Funk Parade celebrations, embassy open houses are back after two years, nature walks, live music festivals and concerts, a one-of-a-kind garden art party at Hirshhorn and so much more. Spring is arguably the most beautiful (though certainly the most fleeting) time of year in DC even if the weather can be a bit finicky. Celebrate Black history every day Historian, scholar, and writer Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week, the precursor to Black History Month, from his rowhouse in D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood in 1926. The home, owned by the National Park Service, is currently closed due to COVID (definitely worth a visit when it reopens) but you can pay a visit to the Carter G. Woodson Memorial located at 9th Street and Rhode Island Avenue, NW, which is a couple of blocks from his house.
